[The pause goes a little longer than he means for it to. His fingers long for something to fiddle with, so in absence of that he spreads them on the table with a seemingly light pressure, a mirror to Maruki's. Maybe it's enough to brace him against the words he's about to say.]

If I'd known you then... [His words are soft and slow. Deliberate.] ...In that reality, where I did know you. I don't think I would've had any need to tell you that.

[He doesn't even have to imagine it. He knows it without a doubt.

Maruki Takuto surely took his loneliness away.

Akira wonders if that other him was scared of it, too. If the ease he felt speaking to him, like they'd known each other their entire lives, terrified him to the bone even more than the thought of running away.]

Anyway. [His hand is steady, at least, when he pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose.] For me it was less the power than the people I surrounded myself with. It was knowing that we had a place to belong amongst ourselves. If you asked the others, though, it might be a different answer. The thing it changed in me was mostly that I was finally able to make a difference.

[To let what was inside of him be unchained. To help others the way that he wished he had been helped. To have one place he could wear the mask that burned hottest in his heart.

He's almost surprised Maruki doesn't know this, with how much else he seems to know Akira wholly... but at the same time, it doesn't. No matter the reality, in normal circumstances, he would always keep things that can be connected to the Phantom Thieves close to his chest.]
